Now, as promised, in case you haven’t played it yet, is my description and review of the fourth online slot I mentioned: The Haunted Horseman. I was so blown away by this super-scary slot that I made it Barb’s Best Bet.

The Haunted Horseman basics

The Haunted Horseman is an online video slot by High 5 Games inspired by The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. It consists of five reels, three rows, and 99 paylines. However, it is unlike any online slot you have ever played.

The Haunted Horseman could be the most terrifying character you have ever encountered. Your task is to try to stop this evil decapitated murderer from wreaking more havoc.

The action takes place at night in a spooky village. But hopefully, the creepy symbols, eerie soundtrack, and medium-high volatility won’t scare you away prematurely, before you have a chance to trigger special features like Tumbling Reels, mystery cash, and Free Spins, any of which can send your profits soaring.

The Haunted Horseman bet range

The minimum bet per spin is 60 cents, while the maximum is $180 or higher (depending on where you play). You can also play for free in demo mode, which I highly recommend for new players to acclimate themselves to this scary slot before taking on The Haunted Horseman for real money.

The Haunted Horseman RTP and volatility

One of my requirements for online slot Best Bet status is a return to player (RTP) of at least 96 percent or higher. The Haunted Horseman has a published RTP of 96.0 percent.

However, this slot also has medium-high volatility. In other words, while the slot does pay out frequently, you may also encounter some dry spells when your bankroll can take a substantial hit. The Haunted Horseman symbols

The Haunted Horseman contains nine regular symbols along with a wild symbol and a scatter symbol.

Regular symbols

The highest paying regular symbol is the headless horseman. His entire head is depicted as a pumpkin. Five of these monstrous-looking characters across a payline will reward you with 350x your bet. This symbol only appears in the Free Games bonus round.

The other three higher-paying regular symbols in the bonus round, in descending order of value, include a man with a lantern, a lady with brunette hair, and a lady with blonde hair. If you land five of a kind in a row, they pay 325x, 300x, and 275x your bet, respectively.

In the base game, instead of the pumpkin-faced headless horseman and man with a lantern, the two highest paying regular symbols are two other male characters. The highest paying of these has blood splattered all over his face.

The three lower-paying regular symbols in both the base and bonus games are the playing cards A, K, and Q.

Winning combinations including any of the aforementioned symbols are formed in the same manner as on most online slots. Three, four, or five like symbols need to land adjacently on consecutive reels on a payline starting with the reel farthest to the left.

Wild symbol

The wild symbol is The Haunted Horseman logo. It can only appear on reels 2-5. However, it can substitute for any of the regular symbols in this game to help form winning combinations.

Scatter symbol

The scatter symbol is a pumpkin. Three or more landing simultaneously anywhere on the reels in the base game will trigger the Free Games bonus round. Each scatter symbol awards you three Free Spins. Therefore, depending on how many of these symbols show up–three, four, or five–you will receive 9, 12, or 15 Free Spins, respectively.

The Haunted Horseman special features

Last but certainly not least, in true Halloween spirit, this game comes packed with special features designed to scare the daylights out of you. But they also have the potential to be highly rewarding.

Tumbling Reels feature

This innovative feature occurs anytime a winning combination lands on the reels. All of the symbols contributing to the win disappear and new symbols tumble down from above to fill the empty positions. This, of course, can lead to more winning combinations. The Tumbling Reels continue in the same manner until no new winning combinations appear.

However, before the reels start tumbling, sometimes the empty position will display either an additional reward of 10-1,000 credits with a bet multiplier or an extra scatter symbol.

Free Games bonus round

The Free Games are played on a different set of reels, and this is when you are most likely to get the biggest payouts. You will also have your first encounters with The Haunted Horseman. Unfortunately, the Free Games cannot be retriggered.
