History of Golden Nugget

Even from a distance, Golden Nugget Atlantic City is easy to spot since it is the only casino building with a gold exterior. However, once you step inside, you will discover many other things about this casino that are special and unique.

Anyone visiting and playing at Golden Nugget Atlantic City, or playing online on GoldenNuggetCasino.com cannot help but pick up on how every aspect is 21st century ready and millennial-friendly.

So unless you’re already familiar with Golden Nugget’s history, it would be easy to mistake it for a relatively new company, which couldn’t be further from the truth. The first Golden Nugget casino existed in Las Vegas long before many of you were born, all the way back in 1946.

History of Golden Nugget in Atlantic City

Golden Nugget first appearance in Atlantic City also goes back a long time. In 1980, two years after Resorts paved the way as Atlantic City’s first legal land-based casino, leading gambling entrepreneur Steve Wynn opened the Golden Nugget on the far south end of the Boardwalk.

In its heyday, with Wynn at the helm, the property thrived, but its glory years proved to be only temporary. A succession of ownership and name changes over the years were its undoing. Eventually, the property became the Atlantic Club, which went bankrupt and in January, 2014 closed permanently. This first of four Atlantic City casino casualties in 2014 has remained closed and unoccupied ever since.

New Marina location and the new owner, Landry, Inc.

Far from being the last that Atlantic City visitors and gamblers were to see of Golden Nugget, the casino resort was given a second chance to prove itself in this town. It wasted no time making the most of the opportunity, and today there is no doubt about it — Golden Nugget is back, bigger and better than ever. It has also become one of most successful and highest grossing casino operators in Atlantic City.

Golden Nugget Atlantic City reopened in 2012 on the Frank S. Farley Marina on the same site as the former Trump Marina Hotel and Casino. On May 23, 2011, Landry, Inc., which also owns multiple other Golden Nugget properties and restaurants,  had acquired the struggling property from then owner Trump Entertainment.

Would the new Golden Nugget Atlantic City be as successful as the other Landry-owned casino properties? The owner promised as much, but only time would tell because transforming a struggling property into a spectacular one is never easy.

True to its word, Landry, Inc., headed by Texas billionaire Tim Fertitta, spared no expense modernizing and rebranding its new acquisition. On top of the $38 million purchase price, the company poured over $100 million more into badly needed renovations and upgrades. Its slogan was “Out with the old and in with the gold.”

On opening day, there was no doubt that the lofty objective was achieved. However, that was only the start.

Golden Nugget Atlantic City today

Golden Nugget is not the type of company to rest on its laurels. Over the course of the last six years, Golden Nugget Atlantic City opened new clubs and restaurants and introduced many other improvements.

Then in 2016, it became the first casino in New Jersey to offer online players Live Dealer games, which was made possible through live stream from a studio on the Golden Nugget Atlantic City premises.

Fast forward to 2018, and just in time for football season, Golden Nugget Atlantic City has a sportsbook, too!

How to get to Golden Nugget Atlantic City

Golden Nugget Atlantic City is one of three casino hotels in the Marina district; the other two are Harrah’s Resort and Borgata Hotel Casino & Resort.

Unfortunately, the Golden Nugget is not in walking distance of any other Atlantic City casino, even the two other marina casinos. However, it is easily accessible via the No. 2 jitney (from any casino), No. 6 (from other marina casinos), the No. 501 bus (from the Atlantic City bus terminal), or by cab or car.

What the casino offers

Golden Nugget Atlantic City isn’t the town’s largest land-based casino. But with about 1,500 gaming machines and 80 table games in a wide variety of betting denominations, it offers ample choices for everyone.

Poker

There is also a small poker room. However, now that the sportsbook has taken over the poker room’s original location on the casino level, the poker room has relocated to the fourth floor.

While the specific games being spread vary, depending on player traffic and demand, 1-3 No Limit and 3-6 Limit Hold’em are usually available. At busy times, 2-5 no limit is another option. The room features special promotions like Splash the Pot and High Hand, as well as 2x comps on Fridays and 3x comps on Wednesdays. In addition, three hours of cash play on any given Sun.-Thurs. or four hours on Fri. or Sat. entitles you to a free buffet.

Guaranteed No Limit Hold’em tournaments are scheduled daily. In virtually all of the tournaments, the starting stack is 20,000 and the blind levels are 20 minutes long. However, the tournament starting times and buy-ins vary.

24K Select Club Player Rewards Program

Golden Nugget has a player’s rewards program called the 24K Select Club. There are four tiers based on the level of play: 24 Karat Select, Premier, Chairman, and Elite.

The higher your level, the more comps, benefits, rewards, and privileges you receive. For more information on the 24K Select Club, see the casino website.

Other Golden Nugget Atlantic City amenities

Golden Nugget is not just a casino with a hotel, but a complete resort with lots of other amenities. The following is a brief summary.

Restaurants

Golden Nugget caters to all ranges of tastes, appetites, and budgets. So whatever kind of food you’re looking for, from a light snack to a memorable meal at a world-class restaurant, Golden Nugget Atlantic City has you covered.

Other fine dining choices at Golden Nugget Atlantic City include Grotto Italian Ristorante and Lillies (for Asian cuisine).

  • Chart House

The only thing that can possibly make a great steak, prime rib, and seafood restaurant even better is a great view. And the magnificent waterfront view from the Chart House would make a visit to this resort worth the trip even without the superior food.

Dinner is served every night but Monday, and on Saturdays and Sundays, the restaurant is also open for lunch. Reservations are strongly advised.

Or, if you prefer, come for Happy Hour at the bar, 4-7 p.m. Tues.-Fri. or Sun. and enjoy the same breathtaking view for a fraction of the cost. Your choices include a glass of beer ($3-$4), whiskey shot ($4), glass of wine ($6), or specialty cocktail ($7). Small plates are also very reasonably priced at $5-$8.

This classic upscale steak and seafood restaurant chain is rated one of the top 10 steakhouses in the country. It is open every day except Sunday for dinner starting at 5 p.m. To assure space for you and your party at the desired time, advance reservations are advised.

Alternatively, Happy Hour at the bar and lounge runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day but Sunday, except on Thursday, when it is extended until much later. The Happy Hour menu includes beer ($4-$5), select wines by the glass ($7), and cocktails ($8). Small plates are $6-8 There is also a small a la carte menu.

  • Grotto Italian Ristorante

Who doesn’t love pizza and pasta? Grotto offers a wide variety of both, along with many other authentic Italian dishes. The winning combination makes it not only a perfect choice for a romantic dinner for two but equally suitable for groups, with large platters of food served family style.

Casual dining

Golden Nugget also offers lots of casual dining options, including all of the following.

  •  Michael Patrick’s Brasserie

Casino patrons can get hungry at weird hours, but if you’re at Golden Nugget Casino in Atlantic City, no problem. There’s a good chance that Michael Patrick’s Brasserie, conveniently located next to the sportsbook, is open. Hours of operation are Sun.-Thurs. from 7 a.m. to midnight and round the clock on Fri. and Sat.

While the atmosphere is casual, the food is more upscale than traditional coffee shop fare and therefore a tad pricier. It’s a nice place to try new twists on some of your favorite dishes.

  • The Buffet

The Buffet is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sun.-Thurs. and 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Fri. and Sat.

  • Bill’s Bar & Burger

This NY eatery previously had a branch at Harrah’s, but it is now at the Golden Nugget instead. Burgers and shakes (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are prominent on the menu.

Bill’s is open daily from 9 a.m. to late at night. During Happy Hour–3-6 p.m. daily and 9-11 p.m. Fri.–you can have a beer for $3-$4, or craft beer or house wine for $5, a mini-burger for $5, or half-price appetizer.

  • Bean and Bread

For coffee, baked goods, or a quick snack on the go, Bean and Bread is open 24/7.

  • H2O Bar & Grille

The H2O Pool and Bar Grille, accessible from the 6th floor and located outdoors, is open seasonally. Food options include flatbread pizza, burgers, salad, and subs.

Entertainment

  •  The Deck Bayfront Bar & Restaurant

A unique advantage that Golden Nugget offers over other Atlantic City casino properties is its ideal location overlooking the Farley State Marina. All summer long, weather permitting, players in the know head for the Deck to enjoy sun and fun, live entertainment from cover bands, outdoor blackjack, and food and beverages from the Deck Bayfront Bar and Restaurant. The outdoor party gets started early–at 11 a.m. But after dark, is when it really heats up.

While the Deck at the Golden Nugget is open seasonally only, there is lots of other entertainment all year round, like the following:

  • Live performances at the Grand

The Grand, which serves as the Golden Nugget’s showroom, is much smaller than the huge arenas you will find at some other Atlantic City casino-hotels. It only seats 500. But that doesn’t mean you have to settle for less than first rate entertainment. For example, two of the acts scheduled during the fall of 2018 are The Amazing Kreskin and Paul Anka.

  • Flashback Fridays

A golden opportunity to hear tribute bands perform some of your favorite artists’ top hits of the past. And, as an added treat, all of the Flashback Friday concerts are free!

  •  Haven Nightclub

Haven is Golden Nugget’s premier nightclub for those who like to party late. Doors open at 11 p.m. Thursday and 10 p.m. Saturday.

Haven offers a state-of-the-art light and sound system, world-class DJs, and VIP bottle service. But what makes Haven unique is its Veranda–a covered outdoor space equipped with fire pits where you can play blackjack or roulette!

Bars and Lounges

  • Rush Lounge

Rush Lounge, conveniently located very close to the casino, sportsbook, and main atrium, is a fun place to hang out with your friends. It is also a great social gathering spot. Patrons seated at the bar can even play blackjack, roulette, or video poker on a table top machine. During football season, you can also watch the games on TV while enjoying specially priced drinks.

  • Bar 46

Bar 46 is open 24/7. While enjoying your favorite beverage, you can try your luck at slots or video poker on a table top machine.

Other amenities

These are some of the other amenities you can enjoy during your visit to Golden Nugget Atlantic City.

  • H20 Pool: Open seasonally
  • Salon and Spa
  • Fitness Center
  • Shopping: Celebrate your winnings with a clothing, jewelry, accessories, or chocolate purchase.

There’s only one thing missing from the long list of amenities described n this section, and that’s sports betting. The omission wasn’t an oversight. This newest addition of exciting things to do at Golden Nugget Atlantic City deserves a separate major section of its own.

Introduction to The Sportsbook at Golden Nugget

Golden Nugget has established a reputation as a casino that consistently strives to be at the forefront of variety and innovation in the gambling industry. Besides being one of the leading Atlantic City casino properties in gross revenue, its online casino far surpasses all other NJ gambling websites in number of games.

Golden Nugget Online Casino was also the first online casino in New Jersey to offer live dealer games.

So Golden Nugget is not a casino that typically finds itself in the middle of the pack. But in opening a viable sportsbook, that’s exactly where Golden Nugget Atlantic City found itself. The Golden Nugget sportsbook did not open until Aug. 15.

Although the Resorts sportsbook opened the same day, the Golden Nugget sportsbook opened at 9 a.m. vs. 11 a.m. for Resorts, thereby joining the NJ sports betting market as the fifth sportsbook.

The temporary sportsbook that should have never opened

Given the short window of time between the legalization of sports betting and the start of the football season, plus the fact that there were plenty of other sports to bet on during the summer, casinos faced a tough decision. Should they hold off opening a sportsbook until a permanent state-of-the-art facility was ready? Or should they open sooner rather than later with a smaller temporary sportsbook with few, if any, amenities and introduce the enhanced sports betting facility at a later date?

In every instance, the casinos opted for a temporary sportsbook. It seemed like a smart business decision since there would be enough customers wanting to bet sports like baseball, soccer, and tennis to make opening worthwhile, but not so many that a small sportsbook couldn’t handle it. However, the different casinos varied considerably both in the amount of time they took to get even a temporary sportsbook up and running and the quality of the service offered.

Borgata and Ocean Resort Casino are to be congratulated, not only for opening their temporary sportsbooks in June, but for making them the type of place that customers would be happy to keep coming back to until the permanent sportsbook was ready. Although Bally’s Wild West and Harrah’s didn’t open their temporary sportsbooks until July 30 and Aug. 1, respectively, those casinos also met their responsibility admirably to get the job done right. You can read my reviews of all of these sportsbooks on NJ Gambling Websites.

The temporary sportsbook at Golden Nugget, on the other hand, was literally a hole in the wall. It is to this casino’s credit that customers only had to deal with it for two weeks before the unveiling of an outstanding permanent sports betting facility on August 31. But my ill-timed brief visit to the temporary sportsbook on August 30 had me leaving feeling embarrassed for the casino. It was a temporary sportsbook that never should have opened.

My Aug. 30 visit

Although I didn’t know it at the time, Aug. 30 was the last day of the temporary sportsbook that had been open at Golden Nugget since Aug. 15. Technically, it fit the definition of a sportsbook since there was a podium that players could step up to and place their bets, receive a ticket, and return to cash it if they won.

However, there were no chairs, no TVs, and neither the few betting sheets available nor the board on the wall included anywhere near all of the available betting options.

Therefore, a player who was interested in another game had to ask one of the two employees as the podium for the betting line.

I couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to go there to bet when there were other places in town where one could not only pick up the necessary handicapping information but stick around all afternoon or evening to watch the games in comfortable surroundings. But I did inquire when the permanent sportsbook was expected to open. I also asked what hours it would be open, how many TVs there would be, whether food and beverages could be purchased, and if sports bettors could earn comps. Every question received the same answer of “I don’t know.”

Permanent Golden Nugget sportsbook opens Aug. 31

You can imagine my surprise learning from a Sept. 1 article in The Press of Atlantic City that the Golden Nugget permanent sportsbook opened the previous day.

What amazed me, even more, was not being given that information when I visited the sportsbook just one day prior. How could the people working there not know that the permanent sportsbook was going to open the very next day, or if they did know, not want to tell me?

The answer to that question will forever remain a mystery, but at least I would get the answers to my other questions about the Golden Nugget sportsbook sooner rather than later. So with that in mind, I made a return visit, hoping that this time I would have only great things to say about this place. I can sum up my findings in one sentence. What a difference a day makes!

Literally, overnight The Sportsbook at Golden Nugget was transformed from a podium in a hallway with not a chair or TV in sight to a spacious room with 85 TVs, comfortable seating for more than 100 players, and food and drink waitress service. The entire room is non-smoking.

Golden Nugget sportsbook hours

The Golden Nugget Sportsbook is open from 10 a.m. to midnight daily. Hours may be extended as scheduling and player demand warrant.

What you can do at Golden Nugget sportsbook

When the Golden Nugget Sportsbook was confined to a podium in a hallway, all it was good for was a quick stop to make a bet on the run. But now that the sportsbook has its own separate room (the former poker room), there is so much more you can do there.

If you need more time to study the games that interest you and finalize your selections, no problem. Grab a comfortable seat and stretch out and relax on one of the 25 sofas, two chaise lounges, or 12 armchairs. Or if you are with a group, you might prefer one of the 13 round tables with cushioned chairs to seat four.

Of course, after you place your bets, you can return to the same seat and watch the games. Now that there are 85 TVs, watching multiple games at the same time is easy. Wherever you are seated, you will be able to follow the action.

In between games or whenever you feel like taking a break, the sportsbook’s convenient location, opposite the Rush Lounge, adjacent to Michael Patrick’s Brasserie, and steps away from the casino makes doing other things besides sports betting easy.

Or, if you want to hurry back to the games as soon as possible, order something to go from Michael Patrick’s or Bill’s Bar & Burger and take it back to the sportsbook.

However, Golden Nugget sports bettors might like another option even better. Stay where you are and take advantage of the food and beverage service in the sportsbook itself. A waitress will take your order and bring your food and beverage directly to your chair or sofa and table!

Comp program for sports bettors

Unfortunately, as of this writing, Golden Nugget does not have any comp program in place for sports bettors. I was surprised and disappointed to hear this, as Borgata, Ocean Resort Casino, Bally’s Wild Wild West, and Harrah’s do allow sports bettors to earn comps. I wouldn’t call their comp offers generous by any means, but at least it’s a start.

I was told that Golden Nugget hopes to do likewise down the road,  but there is no definitive information at this time as to when this will happen or what the casino will offer.

What’s to like and what’s not to like at Golden Nugget Sportsbook

Golden Nugget and Ocean Resort Casino are the only two casinos that managed to open their permanent sportsbooks in time for the 2018 football season, and for that they are to be congratulated. In fact, both debuted the same day, Friday,  August 31.

My overall impression of Golden Nugget’s permanent sportsbook is overwhelmingly positive. I think it is even good enough to make your regular sportsbook of choice. However, in a few areas, this sports betting facility still falls short.

What’s great about it

  •  Just in time for football season

As mentioned earlier, Golden Nugget should have simply waited two more weeks until the permanent sportsbook was completed and skipped the temporary sportsbook altogether.

But more importantly, while other casinos that have been dragging their feet now find themselves with much bigger crowds and longer lines than they can properly handle, Golden Nugget is able to service the huge football crowd much more efficiently. That’s because Golden Nugget was ready.

  • Convenience and comfort

The sportsbook is very close to the casino so it is easy to find. It is also adjacent to Michael Patrick’s Brasserie. But sports bettors who are hungry and thirsty also have a much cheaper option of ordering their food and drinks right on the premises. Waitresses take your order and deliver it directly to your seat, which is a lot better than going elsewhere and wondering what is happening in the game you bet on while you are away.

In addition, Golden Nugget Sportsbook offers the epitome of comfort. With sofas and easy chairs galore and a little table to hold your food and drinks while you are rooting for your teams, what more can you ask for from a sportsbook?

You have all the comforts of home and more since you can make your bets, watch the action, and collect your winnings all on the same day in the same place!

  • Lots of betting options

Golden Nugget Sportsbook is a full-service sports betting facility. That is to say it accepts wagers on virtually all major sports. Unfortunately, one notable exception is the NBA. Because Landry Inc. owner Tilman Fertitta also owns the Houston Rockets, Golden Nugget is not allowed to offer betting on any NBA games.

In addition, like all of the other Atlantic City casino sportsbooks, with the sole exception of the Borgata Race & Sports Book, Golden Nugget’s sportsbook does not take bets on horse races either. For more information about the various sports betting options open to you at this casino, see the separate section on What you can bet on at Golden Nugget Sportsbook.

  • $1 Million Golden Gridiron

At Golden Nugget, if your sports handicapping skills are top notch, you don’t have to bet big money to win big money. In fact, every week of the regular NFL football season, this casino is giving you the chance to win big without spending a cent of your own money!

All you have to do is pick the team you think will win each Sunday and Monday NFL game outright any given week. Then the three players with the most correct picks win cash prizes of $5,000, $1,500, or $1,000. You will also be asked to guess the total score on one designated game, which will be used, if necessary, as a tiebreaker.

The contest is free and open to all 24K Select Club cardholders. No casino or sportsbook play is required. You can enter up to six times per week (Tuesday through Sunday), but only one entry is permitted per day. Swipe your player’s card and submit your entries at one of the Fan Zone Kiosks in the main atrium. All entries for any given week must be received by 12 noon on Sunday, an hour before kickoff.

Besides the three top winners each week, 150 players will be randomly picked to win $50 Free Play. A list of each week’s winners will be posted Tuesday starting at 3 p.m. on www.goldennuggetgridiron.com. Winners need to go to the Casino Cage to collect their prize.

Lastly, if you can correctly pick 193 games or more over the course of the entire NFL regular season, you will win $1,000,000!

  • Tableside food and beverage service

Many games go right down to the wire, and sometimes even a game that looks like it’s in the bag winds up losing for you instead due to some fluke last-minute play. But if there is anything that’s certain when it comes to sports betting, it’s that sooner or later anyone watching the games for any length of time is going to get hungry and thirsty.

The problem with going elsewhere to satisfy this basic need is that you could wind up missing important action in a game. If it’s a game you have a big bet on, that’s a big no-no.

Golden Nugget solves the problem perfectly by offering tableside food and beverage service, so you don’t have to go anywhere. Also, what I particularly like about this sportsbook’s food menu is that the choices are filling and cheap at the same time. Whoever designed the menu must be a sports fan, too, because it includes just the kinds of items that would appeal to someone watching a game.

For example, if you only want a snack, fries with cheese sauce ($8), nachos ($12), fried mozzarella sticks with marinara sauce ($10), or chicken tenders ($12) are some of your options. Or for the same price or a few dollars more, you can order something more substantial like a turkey BLT wrap ($13) or a 10” personal pizza (only $10).

What could be better

As you can see, there is a lot that is great about the Golden Nugget sportsbook. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention the areas where this sportsbook can do better.

  • Lack of handicapping information

The people showing up at Golden Nugget and other Atlantic City sportsbooks are a very diverse group. Many are completely new to sports betting and therefore can benefit greatly from a basic guide explaining how the process works and what their options are.

  • No comps for sports bettors

Casual bettors only risking very small amounts of money won’t care, but just as players regularly betting large sums of money in the casino earn comps and tier points for their action, so should sports bettors doing the same. Since sports betting is in large part a game of skill, obviously, comps should not be at the same rate as they are for slot play, but that doesn’t mean that comps should be withheld completely.

Blackjack and video poker players earn comps and so should sports bettors. Unless Golden Nugget corrects this major shortcoming soon, many players will take their action elsewhere.

  • No bets on horses

Many people who bet on sports also like to bet on horses. If it is more convenient for you to travel to Atlantic City to make your sports bets than to go to Monmouth Park or the Meadowlands, betting on horses needs to be an option, too. It is at the Borgata, but nowhere else in Atlantic City, including the Golden Nugget.

What you can bet on at Golden Nugget sportsbook

As at any sportsbook, the specific sports you can bet on vary with both the day and season. However, the sportsbook at Golden Nugget Atlantic City is a full-service sports betting facility. So regardless of when you visit, lots of options are available to you.

Golden Nugget Sportsbook accepts wagers on all of the following:

  • Football
  • Baseball
  • College Basketball
  • Hockey
  • Soccer
  • Golf
  • Boxing
  • Tennis

Missing from this list is pro basketball. Because the owner of Golden Nugget also happens to own the Houston Rockets, the casino is not permitted to offer any action on NBA games. If you wish to bet these games, you will need to do so at another sportsbook.

However, even without the NBA, between point spread and moneyline bets on games the same day or week and future bets on various championships, any bettor looking for lots of action will find that this sportsbook has it. You can also make special bets like parlays and teasers. But keep in mind, if you want to bet a football teaser, you can only do so with teams, not on an over or under bet.

Golden Nugget sportsbook FAQs

How many games can you watch at one time?

Golden Nugget Sportsbook now has 85 TVs for your viewing pleasure. So watching multiple games at once is certainly feasible.

Can you bet on horses?

As mentioned above, as of this writing Golden Nugget Sportsbook is not taking bets on horses. Until further notice, the only place in Atlantic City taking horse racing bets is the Borgata Race & Sportsbook.

How do you place a bet at The Sportsbook?

There are two ways you can place your bets at this sportsbook: from an agent at one of the open ticket windows or at a self-service kiosk. On my last visit there were six open windows and four kiosks. This doesn’t seem like it would be enough, especially on a busy Saturday or Sunday, but I will be returning soon to check.

The minimum bet is $5. You have up to a year to cash your winning tickets.

Can you also bet sports online?

As of this writing, Golden Nugget does not yet have a program in place for online and mobile sports betting. As soon as that changes, we will let you know. So keep checking at NJ Gambling Websites for the latest updated information.

Golden Nugget sportsbook amenities

As mentioned, the special amenities at Golden Nugget Sportsbook include plenty of comfortable seating, dozens of flat-screen TVs, tableside food and beverage service, and a room that is completely non-smoking.

The sportsbook is conveniently located very close to the casino and other places on the property that you might want to check out. But with everything a sports bettor could possibly want right there in the sportsbook itself, there’s no need to go anywhere else.
